English dictionary, an indispensable tool for English learners, plays a vital role in English learning. In recent years, as a new type of dictionary, learner's dictionary has gradually attracted the attention of lexicographers and users. The development of learner's dictionary goes from users to editors, and then back to users. Stepping into the 21st century, with the introduction of computer corpus, English learner's dictionary made rapid progress. An issue is brought back to us:What is dictionary for?Compared with the first, second and third generation of learner's dictionaries, what are the design features of today's learner's dictionary? What are users' attitudes, expectations and criticism towards dictionary? Furthermore, how can we explore into the macro and micro structure of dictionary and carry out the best practice, on the framework of cognitive lexicography, which is composed of schema theory, Second Language Acquisition and information processing theory or else? This paper mainly aims to analyze and study the above questions, in the hope of enlightening learner lexicography in future and bringing the "user-friendly" concept into practice. The object of this study is the 23 typical learner's dictionaries at home and abroad. Most of the illustrative examples in this paper are from the bilingualized dictionaries of "Big Fives", i.e. OALD, LDOCE, CALD, MEDAL and CCALD.This paper derives theory from foreign cognitive lexicography, such as A.P. Cowie's user-related research method, Piaget's schema theory, Dan Sperber and Deirdre Wilson's relevance theory and Brown's language transfer theory.
