In the19th century’s, besides the prosperous development of the poems and novels, the journal of prose also played an important part in English literature. With the development of the industry, newspaper and magazines boomed; and driven by the economic factors, writing gradually turned into a kind of career that could make a living. As a result, many writers abandoned the spirit of traditional writing (the concise language, deep thought and chosen content) to cater to the taste of the bookseller and public readers, so they created a mode of sketch writing:fast writing. Facing the fast development of consumerism, the traditional writers and some journal writers who didn’t write "fast writing" expressed a deep anxiety, and criticized it. In the mean time, the journal writers appeared internal differentiation. Some writers and critics considering themselves as elite writers launched personal attacks to the other journal writers, which formed the "Cockney" dispute. Among the famous journal prose writers in England of the19th century, Lamb is the most special one. He eliminated the anxiety brought by the journal literature through his "Essays of Elia". Meantime, he indicated that the dispute between "Cockney" dispute existing in the internal of the journal writers is of no sense. Lamb’s success of prose writer made the19th century journal literature sparkle in the whole English literature. And from deeper sense, as a learned and intelligent middle-class intellectual, Lamb created positive significance in the process of promoting the English middle-class’s culture right to be legalization.
