The vocabulary of Chinese is very large and its classification is relatively detailed. So it brings many difficulties for foreign students’study. Compared with notional words of Chinese, function words of Chinese are less. But they are difficult to master. And it is easy to make errors. Preposition is a kind of function words, but it has no real meaning. And its position in the sentence, grammatical meaning, origin, usage is very complex. But it is one of the main means in Chinese to show grammatical meaning. So the preposition has an important position in Chinese teaching which can not be ignored.So this paper will compare the preposition in Chinese and in English, and specially analyze the using errors of the preposition which are caused by the foreign students whose mother tongue is English. At the same time this paper will detailed describe the error phenomena of using preposition and summary the type of the error of using preposition. So it will make us find out the laws and causes of the error for using preposition, and help the preposition teaching for foreign students and the edition of teaching material.This paper will choose the Chinese preposition "zai,gen,dui and cong" as the study object. The paper will describe these prepositions one by one from their syntax and semantics, and compare and analyze with the corresponding words in English. At last the paper will give out the cognitive interpretation. These prepositions have crosses in their meaning and usage. The foreign students have produced many errors in the process of their studying Chinese. This paper bases on the Chinese teaching as the second language, and hope that it will be useful for the preposition teaching of the Chinese teaching as the second language.The first part is introduction and it introduces the reason of choosing this title, the present situation of the preposition, the Theoretical basis, the research methods and the scope of the study.The second to the fifth part will detailed analyze and describe the preposition "zai""gen""dui""cong"with comparing them between Chinese and English. At the same time, it will analyze the errors which are caused in the study by the foreign students whose mother language is English.The sixth part will detailed analyze the reasons for those errors that inter lingual transfer, intralingual transfer,influence from study environment and so on.The seventh part will be from the perspective of preposition teaching of Chinese as a second language and give several teaching suggestions about teaching materials, teachers and the these four prepositions.The last part will summarize the whole paper and point out the existing questions in the study.
