This thesis is a comparative study of "Quatre Etudes, Opus7" by Igor Feodro-ovich Stravinsky (Russia,1882—1971) and "Five Pieces for Piano" by George Crumb (American,1929-). It aims to compare and summarize the different technical language styles employed by the two pieces by means of technique analysis and theoretical induction. The thesis begins by examining the social and cultural backgrounds of the two composers and their influences on their musical composition; it then focuses on the similarities and differences in their creative characteristics and compositional techniques with the aim to find the traces of cross-influence of multiple arts in their works and to explore the humanistic and dramatic charm implicit in the works of the two composers.Besides, this thesis also discusses the connection between logical rationale and emotional expression, contemporary compositional technique and ethnic cultural contents in contemporary musical composition. By filling the gap produced by the lack of relevant research in domestic field, the author hopes to provide experience for contemporary musical composition in China and attract more attention to the subject for further research.
