MacDowell is a famous American composer and pianist in the late 19 thcentury. He has written a lot of piano works in his life, include two suits of etudes, the "Twelve piano Etudes"(Op.39) and the “Twelve virtuoso Etudes "(Op.46). These two suits of etudes highly combining the technical training with musical expression, and manifest the unique musical style of the composer, owing to not only the embodiment of the romantic musical style, but also the integration of the American elements.This thesis did an integral research onthese two suits of etudes on the whole, and this essay is divided into three chapters.In the first chapter, the article reveals the characteristics of the two suites of etudes, through the analysis of melody, harmony, rhythm, musical image. The second chapter classified the technology training of these two etudes, also analyzing the technology of each etudein detail.The third chapter started with teaching, explainingthe use of these two etudes as teaching materials.
