Zweig is a famous Austrian novelist, who boarded the literary world as a poet, and his works had topped the list in the worldwide sales. As F.Werfel said,“Zweiggained a worldwide reputation, and I know that no one can be as well known as himdue to his broad and lasting success.” Zweig is a Jewish writer, so his work is full ofdeep Jewish consciousness. As the core value of a writer and his works, ideological exploration and culturalconnotation are also the focus of literature researcher. This dissertation attempts tomake a systematic excavation and arrangement on Zweig and his Jewishconsciousness in his works from the perspective of cultural poetics in order tocomprehensively grasp the thoughts and the literary connotation of the Jewish writer.Focusing on the theme of “the Jewish consciousness reflected in Zweig’sworks”,the dissertation is divided into five parts. The introduction introduces the present research situation and the value of thispaper, and expounds the research methods used-the connotation of the cultural poetics,at the same time, it makes definition of Jewishness and Jewish consciousness. The first part is devoted to the loneliness and fringe of consciousness. Combiningwith the works, it analyses the deep-rooted Jewish loneliness and the situation ofbeing fringed. The second part narrates the wandering destiny of the Jews and their pursuing ofthe root of the national culture. The third part discusses the sense of alienation and the paradox consciousness inZweig’s works. Among them, the alienation includes the person’s self-alienation, thealienation of the relationship among people and the alienation of the socialenvironment and paradox contains the confusions why God chooses some people andabandons others and why some lands should be promised and some should not be.The fourth part analyzes the sense of the prophetic and survival, the Jewish striveto seek the path for the nation and the spiritual power for culture and beliefs, whichreflects the survival sense. The fifth part introduces the sense of the world and modernity of Zweig’s Jewishconsciousness. Zweig was influenced by the humanitarian and the cosmopolitanismculture, so his works display a common kind of spiritual crisis of the modern people, and then make an in-depth reflection and exploration of the survival state, humanvalue and meaning of the western civilization and even the human civilization. In short, Zweig’s works implicitly exhibit a deep sense of Jewish, which alsoincludes the deep reflection on the Jewish spirit and cultural roots. So the culturalpoetic study of Zweig and his works is a very meaningful and valuable job. Andthrough the study of Zweig and his works, we can gain an inspiration: we shouldadhere to the humane care, focus on human’s living conditions, and pursue human’sultimate value.
