Dong Zhongshu is a great master in Confucian studies in the early years of the Han Dynasty. Inherited the essence of the Confucian thoughts, Dong put forward a set of ideas in Confucianism which were richer than those by Confucius himself. Dong’s theories made great contributions to the development and long-term stability of the Han Dynasty. Through the analyses of Dong’s works and of the comments on his works by other scholars, the author finds that up to now there is still a noticeable inadequacy in the in-depth study of Dong’s music ideas and their implications to the modern society.This paper discusses the musical philosophy developed by Dong Zhongshu, it aims to enrich and improve the overall research into the philosophy of music. This paper argues that by drawing on Confucian ideology and theory Dong Zhongshu created a new set of ideological system, which contributed greatly to the unity of the Western Han Dynasty; The purpose of the creation of the system was for the development and long-term stability of the Han Dynasty; Dong Zhongshu combined music philosophy closely with the ideological system and political ideas, in a sense, music philosophy is one of the very important ideas in the the Zhongshu music philosophy; in addition,"the royal music divine","the unity of text quality" and music philosophy ontology are also Dong’s important music philosophy.In summary, this study is divided into four parts:the first chapter is the trajectory of life and academic contributions on the Zhongshu the life trajectory and artistic contribution described; the second chapter is a source of ideas and philosophical foundation, the Zhongshu thories of the source and its laid the philosophical foundation of their thories; the third chapter is the ideological content of the philosophy of music, on the Zhongshu music philosophy summarized; the fourth chapter is the contemporary significance of historical criticism, the main interpretation of the Zhongshu music philosophy the present age of the inpact and significance, and fron a historical point of view, criticism of its role and impact of negative thought.Dong’s music philosophy not only has a certain position in history, but also has very important implications for the present era. At the same time, Dong’s music philosophy also has a critical side, Dong applied music as tools and instruments to governing a country, such a pragmatic point of view should be criticized.
