With the concept of national emotion having been emphasized and elevated, increasing attention has been paid to the Chinese national vocal music art. Especially in the recent decades of reform-open policy, huge changes have been brought by multi-nation cultural blend in phonetic forms, vocal skills and the style of music works. Are all the changes some kind of development or just fawning vulgar? Should our art become compatible with others’or just stick with what it was? There have been warm debates on these two questions without interruption since1920s. As a form of art which uses the sound as the medium, the sound itself is in the right position to speak as to the development of vocal music. And the Young Singer’s Competition of the CCTV (YSC), through the TV which is a powerful medium, has been an authoritative and just witness of the development of the Chinese mainstream national vocal music art since1984.. In this paper, the performance of different winners of YSC in different years have been analyzed so that the trajectory of the development of the national vocal music art since the first time it was hosted can be outlined.
