The Effects Of Deliberate And Automatic Emtion Regulation On Inhition Ability

Recently, the relationship between personly emtion regulation and cognion become one of hot topics in the emtion and cognition area. Several researchers have some studies on the impacts of emotion regulation on memory, decision and reasoning and so on, which are far more than on cognitive control, involving response inhibition and interference suppression. The effect of deliberate and automatic emtion regulation on inhibition ability has not been seen at home and abroad. This paper focus on reappraisal reinforcement, reappraisal negligence, expressive enhancement and expressive suppression, and discuss the impacts of emotion regulation on inhibition ability from the points of deliberate and automatic emtion regulation.Experiment one explore the four deliberate emotion regulation methods, by different instuctions, have what effects on response inhibition and interference suppression in negative emotion state. We use single factor (reappraisal reinforcement, reappraisal negligence, expressive enhancement, expressive suppression and control group) pretest and post-test experimental design.Experiment two study the impact of the four automatic emotion regulation methods, designing Sentence Unscrambling Task in order to implictly prime different emotion regulation methods, on response inhibition and interference suppression. We use single factor (reappraisal reinforcement, reappraisal negligence, expressive enhancement, expressive suppression and control group) pretest and post-test experimental design.Through the research we draw the following several conclusions:(1)antecedent-focused emotion regulation and response-focused emotion regulation have some cost from tow different dimensions:antecedent-focused regulations ocupy the attentional resources regarding cognitive level operation, and response-focused regulations ocupy the attentional resources regarding action level operation.(2)the effects of emotion regulation on cognition vary with different emotion regulation methods:in antecedent-focused regulations, reappraisal negligence cost less than reappraisal reinforcement, and no inadaptative cognitive consequences; in response-focused regulation, expressive enhancement cost less than expressive suppression, and no inadaptative cognitive consequences.(3)the effect of automatic regulation, which can operate without consciousness, is as better as deliberate regulation’s.
