On Style Reproduction In Bing Xin’s Translating Gitanjali

Gitanjali, translated by Tagore himself from Bengali to English, won the Nobel Prizefor Literature for Tagore. The verses are brimful of rhythmical beauty and philosophicalenlightenment. Even though it is acknowledged that poems are “notoriously” difficult totranslate, Gitanjali—the free verse poetry is the interest of lots of translators, and variousversions of Chinese translation of Gitanjali appear in the market. However, amongnumerous translating versions, Bing Xin’s has got passed on and been regarded as classic.Even in some versions, obvious imitation of Bing Xin’s translating could be found. Thethesis author has collected some of the translating versions in Chinese and carried outcomparative study among them, aiming to find out how Bing Xin’s translating outshinesothers’, and how she manages to do so.In order to make the comparative study as objective and direct as possible, the thesis isconstructed on the basis of Liu Miqing’s Stylistic Markers Theory, which includes formalmarkers and non-formal markers. The author analyzes the linguistic features in Gitanjaliand the techniques Bing Xin has employed to reproduce such features, which is also madeinto comparison with other two translating versions. Also the reasons behind Bing Xin’ssuccessful linguistic reproduction of style are explored, finding that Bing Xin is very closeto Tagore in choosing themes, philosophies and horizons. Thus it is concluded that BingXin has found the most proper way to reproduce those lexical, syntactical and rhetoricalcharacteristics in Gitanjali; and Bing Xin, with the influence from Tagore, shares a lot ofsimilarity with him in manners of expressions, personal experience, values and philosophy,which also explains her success in reproducing Gitanjali’s style and thoughts.
