How To Translate Modifiers In Clothing And Accessory Product Names

Names of clothing and accessories usually consist of modifiers which indicatematerial, color, design, style, tailoring, decoration and so on. Due to their highlydescriptive and unconventional wording, those names are often difficult to translate fromEnglish into Chinese. Using a commonly established adjectival modifier sequence of “美(beautiful)小(small)圆(round)旧(old)黄(yellow),法国(French)木(wooden)书(reading)房(room)” as a guideline, this thesis analyzes four cases of modifier translation in clothingand accessory product names in Hello Kitty, Dior, Tod’s and MaxMara brands. It discussesproper ways of handling individual words as modifiers, word groups or phrases asmodifiers, and complex nonmenclatures with multiple product components and modifiers..The thesis concludes with a brief summary of general principles and specific ways inhandling modifiers in the translation of clothing and accessory names.
