The dissertation aims at researching the class engagement of backward students in collaborative learning, exploring factors and solving measures, by investigating their engaging time, forms and attitude. Adopting the essence researching method, the dissertation studies the cases of three English majors of a vocational college through interview and observance.The dissertation consists of five parts, including Chapter One Introduction, which introduces the issue, study aims, meanings and methods; Chapter Two Core Conception Definition, which defines the collaborative learning, the backward students and the class engagement degree; Chapter Three Literature Review, which makes review and comments of the related literatures home and abroad; Chapter Four Case Study, which narrates the cases of three backward students, analyzes the class engagement degree in behavior, sensibility, and recognition. Meanwhile, it deduces the factors and solving measures; Chapter Five Conclusion and introspection, which makes the conclusion to the types, factors and solutions of engagement degree, and rethinks the study object, the methods, the contents, the processes as well as the results.The significance of this study is giving case reference to the practice of collaborative learning, and providing theoretic and practicing help to teachers and education researchers. Besides, it also can help backward students improve their collaborative learning and enhance their engagement degree. Furthermore, it can enhance the academic scores of the whole class. Finally, it can be propitious to the innovation of college English teaching.
