With the educational concept of “student-centered” put forward,the educational circles pay more and more attention to the actual situation of student engagement in classroom teaching,and many scholars have also carried out a lot of research on related issues.However,research on the correlation between student's class engagement and their achievements is relatively scarce,and in the subject of English,the research on the relationship between the two is even less.Based on this,this paper studies the correlation between high school student's class engagement and their English learning achievements.This paper focuses on solving the following questions:(1)What is the current situation of high school student's English class engagement?(2)What are the factors that influence student's class engagement?(3)What is the relationship between student's class engagement and English learning achievement? The study adopts the combination of quantitative research and qualitative research,a total of 12 students from Class 13 Grade 2 and Class 14 Grade 2 in the Second Senior High School of Mudanjiang City were observed in class,for better explanation of the classroom observation results,a questionnaire survey was conducted for 120 students in the above two classes,twelve male students and twelve female students were organized to participate in semi-structured interviews,and the data were collated and analyzed by using SPSS17.0 data analysis software.This study mainly draws the following conclusions:(1)The present situation of high school student engagement in English classroom teaching is that affective engagement is the highest,followed by cognitive engagement and behavioral engagement.In the behavioral engagement,the degree of concentration is higher than the degree of intensive study;in the cognitive engagement,the use of reliable strategy is higher than that of deep strategy and surface strategy;students have the highest sense of success in the affective engagement.(2)The gender of students,their seating situation has a certain impact on student's class engagement.(3)There is a positivecorrelation between student's behavioral engagement,cognitive engagement and affective engagement in the classroom and English learning achievement,that is,the higher the degree of behavioral,cognitive and affective engagement,the better the English learning achievement.The above research results reveal the importance of student's class engagement,and provide useful inspiration for teachers how to carry out positive English classroom teaching practice:(1)Teachers should pay full attention to the important significance of student's class engagement to improve the quality of teaching,and actively carry out various forms of classroom activities to create opportunities for student engagement.(2)In the design of classroom activities,teachers should attach great importance to develop student's independent inquiry ability,and promote students to use a variety of learning strategies.(3)Teachers should pay attention to individual differences in teaching and fully arouse the enthusiasm of all students.(4)Students' seat arrangements should be adjusted regularly to achieve equal opportunities for class engagement.
