In China, for half a century, research on Zhang Ai-ling’s almost without interruption.Especially from the80’s, the research of Zhang Ai-ling and her work gradually comes to aclimax. The number of studies has greatly increased, with the research on Zhang Ai-ling andher work from different angles. In the40’s, Zhang Ai-ling’s literary works in China areprimarily showed to the public in the form of publication. Along with the development of themass media, she and her literary works have become a cultural symbol in the cultural market.And when entering in the80’s, Zhang Ai-ling’s going further into the field of popular culturewith the returning of Zhang Ai-ling’s hot to the Mainland of China. So in the modern era,Zhang Ai-ling’s literary works are uncovered in different forms of cultural goods to develop, atthe same time, it extends its extension. Therefore, we change the point of view from past’s artsand cultural studies to the perspective of market and culture and communication to conductthe research about Zhang Ai-ling. This thesis is aiming at the study of Zhang ai-ling’s novel,through analysis of Zhang Ai-ling’s novel, life of Zhang Ai-ling’s investigation and publicationof the works of Zhang Ai-ling’s investigation and analysis of the writing style of Zhang Ai-ling’s novels, film and television adaptations of Zhang Ai-ling’s novel analysis, comparisonand analysis between dramas and novels of Zhang Ai-ling’s art form and other methods toverify that how the novels of Zhang Ai-ling extend its extension in the cultural market.This thesis focuses on the three areas. First, the novel’s publication of Zhang Ai-ling’sliterary. Zhang Ai-ling now is very popular with attention to women writers in China, but herliterary career is not flat in the fact. Historical changes in the political situation have had a greatimpact on Zhang Ai-ling’s literary career. Therefore, I explore how Zhang Ai-ling’s novelworks in the publishing market in different socio-political backgrounds. Second, the adaptations about films and televisions on Zhang Ai-ling’s novels. Zhang Ai-ling’s novelnamed the pouring love of city is adapted to the film for the first time in1983by Hong Kongdirector Ann Hui. Many of her later works are adapted to film and television by one afteranother. The film adaptation of Zhang Ai-ling’s novel Lust,Caution by the Taiwan directorAng Lee is a success in2007. So, Zhang Ai-ling becomes famous with the help of Ang Lee. Inthis chapter, it is about the reasons why Zhang Ai-ling’s novels are important for the film andvideo,and related to the analysis of the characteristics of Zhang Ai-ling’s novels, and alsostudies in how Zhang Ai-ling’s novels have an effect on Ann Hui and Ang Lee’s movies. Third,the productions of drama about Zhang Ai-ling’s novels. We will examine the elements ofdrama about Zhang Ai-ling ’s novels in this chapter and the difficulties when adapted fortheatre.Based on the above analysis, this paper investigates on how does the Zhang Ai-ling’snovel connect with the mass media, how her novels can be extended indefinitely in thecultural market. On the basis of analysis above, we have a further research on theintersexuality of Zhang Ai-ling’s novel and the mass media. In this way, we can raise somemethodology about how can the market for novels extend its extension in the modern popularculture.
