A Study Of Zhang Ling’s New Immigrant Novels

As an important part of the world Chinese literature, the New Immigrant Literature which has achieved fruitful results is leading the overseas Chinese literature towards a new age. As one of the representative writers of North America New Immigrant Literature, Zhang Ling together with Yan Geling and Hong Ying is acknowledged as “Three Carriages” in overseas Chinese literature. Since the 1990 s,Zhang Ling has always been active in new immigrant writing and has created abundant new immigrant novels. In recent years, she has received more and more attention for her excellent writings. Zhang Ling’s novels are well-known for the wide cultural vision, profound thoughts and rich connotations and the unique artistic style.She presents us the changeable time by narrating the love affair between men and women. And by this means she has fully written out the variety of immigration life and the vicissitudes of the immigration history.This thesis is composed of three sections. And Zhang Ling’s new immigrant novels are studied from three aspects: themes and intentions, cultural implication and aesthetic taste. The first section discusses the themes of Zhang Ling’s novels and focuses on the description of love, female and the changeable time so as to highlight her technique of writing and the space-time construction across oceans. The second section deals with cultural implication of Zhang Ling’s new immigrant novels. It reveals the openness and inclusion of Zhang Ling’s cultural perspective as well as her pity for the world and humankinds in her writing by starting from identity, cultural clash and religious feelings. The third section mainly studies artistic features of Zhang Ling’s novels. By starting with most distinguished features such as two-lane structure,poetic language and classical style, it analyzes the aesthetic value and literary meaning of Zhang Ling’s novels. The thesis is ended by presenting an overall evaluation on the significance and limitation of Zhang Ling’s new immigrant novels and points out the influence and contribution she has made for the development of the New Immigrant Literature.
