An important form of interpretation, consecutive interpreting is frequently used in variouskinds of conferences due to its high accurateness in rendering the source language into targetlanguage. Consecutive interpreting is also the first stage in simultaneous interpreting training, laying solid foundations for further interpreting training. For a long time, teachers and researchershave been emphasizing the importance of note-taking in the improvement of consecutiveinterpreting performance. However, note-taking, though crucial, is only one aspect in the wholeconsecutive interpreting process. There are many other aspects that are also vital to the finalperformance of consecutive interpreting. For example, pre-interpreting preparation and listeningcomprehension are vital parts that would decide interpreter’s performance. This paper has tried toprobe into the processes of both pre-interpreting preparation and listening comprehension fromschematic perspective and provided suggestions on the theoretical level. In the meantime, sighttranslation has long been applied as a bridge to transform interpreters from consecutiveinterpreting to simultaneous interpreting. Therefore, part of its skills could be helpful in improvingconsecutive interpreting performance. For instances, doing sight translation requires interpreters tohave the ability to cut the information flow into smaller units and this method could also be helpfulto release interpreter’s memory burden. This paper would discuss the role of schema theory as wellas the application of these skills in consecutive interpreting and provide suggestions from boththeoretical and operational level.
