In junior middle school English teaching, students’ English level can be greatlyreflected from their reading proficiency, however, during the reading process,instructions and explanations take plenty of time while the cultivation of students’reading ability is often neglected. Therefore, how to conduct effective readingteaching is a topic which deserves studying. Student-centered teaching mode canreally make the students become autonomous learners, it can also help students thinkindependently and develop their reading skills in group cooperation, then they can useeffective skills to clear the obstacles and understand the passage on their own.Therefore, teacher-centered English teaching should be changed intostudents-centered, and the students can take an active in the lesson and become themasters of their learning.This paper focuses on the study of how to take the student as the center, whichrequires the design to enable students to participate in classroom activities actively, tolet them know that they are the subjects of study, it is a process of continuous learningand exploration process to complete reading a passage, therefore the design ofclassroom teaching is the main content of the research. How to design teachingactivities during different stages of the process is emphasized in this research.In order to verify the effectiveness of student centered reading teaching modein junior middle school, the writer uses the passages of Oxford English text books asexperimental material in the student centered reading teaching mode, design differentreading strategies and reading activities according to different reading topics. Thewriter collected first-hand information through the design of students’ questionnaireand quantitative collection of pre-test and post-test examinations, and then analyzedreading ability changes before and after the experiment from the statistical analysis ofstudents, it is proved that the student centered teaching mode can improve theeffectiveness of reading teaching.The research comes up with the following results: 1. The student-centered reading teaching mode is effective in the followingaspects:(1). It can enhance students’ confidence(2). It can make students more interested in English reading(3).It enables students to take an active part in the class activities.(4). It helps to develop students reading strategies.(5). It cultivates students’ autonomy which helps their study in the long run.(6).It improves students reading ability.2. The whole teaching procedure from lesson plan to lesson practice should bestudent-centered. In the process of designing teaching activities, it is required thatstudents’ need, learning style and difference of English level should be taken intoconsideration, the design of teaching activities should be based on the difference ofstudents. Besides, the activities should be designed to develop students’ readingstrategies and improve their reading proficiency.3. The final evaluation of reading should be student centered. Therefore, theformative assessment should be adopted in the teaching process, students shoulddevelop learning autonomy and adopt formative evaluation through their own analysisand judgment in the whole process of reading.
