The Study Of Contextual Influence On English Modality

Modality has remarkable function in human being’s language. Modality represents the emotion and manner of the speaker to certain things and affaires. It indicates the speaker’s perspective and attitude towards the current utterance or the context in which the utterance is restricted. There are variety kinds of usage of modality in the daily communication of people. This thesis mainly concerns the influence of context on the expression and interpretation of English modality in the process of utterance communication. According to the discussion of the restrictive function of context, the thesis manifests the relationship between the context and modality. Based on this, the thesis illustrates the way that the modality meaning changing due to certain features of context. The present analysis of modality can conduct people a better way for communication. Meanwhile, it also contributes to the future foreign language teaching and learning.
