Usually, the city is strongly favored by writers. For Italo Calvino,who loves city life, the city is an integral part in his novel. What doeshe think about everything of cities? Following his writing of cities, wecan find some strong interesting stories. Some stories may be about him,some stories are in his reveries. In his novel, all the reality and fancyof cities are memory of writer. What’s more, that is all the reflectionof cities.The thesis is trying to organize the materials coherently andsystematically, which is mainly related to city in Calvino’s novel.Basing on the theory relating to the viewpoint of city, we can interpretthe text by three viewpoints, which is urban image、urban public spaceand urban characters. Basing on the blundering city’s glittering facade,we hope try our best to find one potential order, which exists in themetropolis.This thesis is divided into five parts, including introduction,threechapters in the body and conclusion.Introduction briefly summariespresent research at home and abroad,Chapter one is mainly about oneoverview of the urban image of Calvino’s novel. From the view of realand imagined, the thesis makes a simple discourse about the shaping andconstruction of city. Chapter two is mainly paying attention to thefeature of urban public space and the meaning behind the feature. Themeaning is also having three sections. On the one hand, because of thedifferentiation and division of the space, the inequality around peopleis reflected. On the other hand, it is the opposition between people andsociety. Besides, the third section is the spatial disorientation, whichmanifests the opposition between people and environment, self-lost ofpeople. In this part, the writer of the thesis will quote some viewpointsand terms of space theory properly, so that strengthening the convincing.Chapter three is the various types of crowd living in city, which isincluding peasant in city、urban stranger and urban mediators living in the affluent stage of capitalist society, so that we can mainly discusstheir different living conditions and the point of problem. In the courseof developing of city, they have played the different role. By theirdifferent perspective and different city scenery,Calvino observedcomplicated society, and infused some penetrating judgments and hisideology of cities.Conclusion summarizes the paper comprehensively andappreciates the significance of Calvino’s stories,then points out theinspiration given by the stories to the present people.
