The Roman empire age is a great age in which the ancient Roman city civilization was highly developed, the economy was booming, the culture was prosperous, the political situation was extremely complex. The space layout of ancient Roman city was deeply affected by economical , political and cultural factors. In which kind of city space the developed Roman civilization was produced? How did the layout of Roman city reflect the historical and cultural changes? How did individuals perceived the physical and social frame of the city in which they lived? What's the identity and the difference about the attitudes to the city space between ancient Roman people and us? All of these questions attract me to make further research. The artical is divided into three chapters. The first chapter mainly introduces the general situation about the city space of ancient Roman city, classify the city space into public space and private space , elaborating them seperately. The second chapter discusses how the common people's activity affected the city space and how the city space affected the residents' behavioral pattern and psychological character through introducing the city life in ancient Roman city. The third chapter mainly elaborates the relationship between city space and political power. The artical trys to reveal the important role which the city space played in city life and in creation of city civilization, and present the relationship between city space and common residents, elites and empire political power. It's a chance to broaden the city research field of view, make us have a better understanding about the ancient Roman city culture and provide reference for modern city construction through researching the space layout of ancient Roman city.
