In modern society, the dissatisfaction caused by the disadvantages of IndustrialRevolution and the nostalgic mentality derived from human nature both make primitivismbecome a worldwide cultural trend. Primitivism is mainly characterized by the conflictbetween primitive and civilization, the opposition between nature and industry and thecollision between instinct and reason. It claims that humans should come back to a naturaland real state which is primitive and attain a harmonious unity of body and mind, of man andnature and of man and society, thus the realization of self-salvation and revival. In modernliterary creation, primitivism in Lawrence’s is a most striking trend. In a series of his literaryworks, Lawrence eulogizes primitive human nature in a subversive manner and advocates areturn of a natural and real state. With Lawrence’s works as the starting point, the thesis aimsto probe into the specific forms of primitivism, the reasons for the formation of primitivethoughts in addition to its value and significance.Centered on the primitive trend of Lawrence’s works, the thesis will discuss thefollowing aspects. The preface is mainly about the origin and development of primitivism andits reception and interpretation in China. Chapter one summarizes the specific forms ofprimitive trend in his works, i.e. nature worship, reproduction worship and death worship.Chapter two discusses the concrete reasons for the formation of primitive thoughts bystudying the social features of the times of his life and his own experience. Primitive trend embodied in Lawrence hasmade up for the spiritual beliefs that are missing in the current era and has satisfied thepeople’s psychological needs, becoming an external proposition.
