Influence Of Translator’s Culture Identity On The Reconstruction Of Narrative Mood

Narratology is the subject which focuses on such issues as structures, devices and rules of narrative works, mainly of fictions. Researches of narratology mainly focuses on three categories:tense, mood and voice, of which narrative mood is most closely related to fictional translation. It is narrative mood that deals with the original author’s manipulation of narrator and characters. The style of the original author, the expressive devices and the unique aesthetic value are all conveyed through the manipulation and embodied in narrative mood. Hence, narrative mood, the crucial concept in narratology, is of great significance to literary translation, especially to fictional translation. At present, researches of reconstruction of narrative mood in fictional translation have not yet broken the limitation of text and few people have been fully aware of the fact that aspects such as culture have influence on the process of reconstruction of narrative mood. In fact, reconstruction of narrative mood, as an important aspect of fictional translation, is restricted and influenced by culture. As the subject of translation activity, translator’s understanding and strategy for the adoption of narrative mood are subject to his/her own cultural identity.Based on the theory of narrative mood, the two English versions of Chinese novel Lao Can You Ji by Yang Xianyi and Harold Shadick are researched. A large number of examples in the thesis will prove:1) in the fictional translation, the cultural identity of translator impacts the understanding and delivery of the narrative mood in the original text and then makes the target text presents a different narrative style.2) The accurate reconstruction of narrative mood can not only avoid the problem of "deceptive equivalence", but also convey the artistic and aesthetic value in source text (ST), making a target text (TT) more familiar with original text in narrative style.The thesis finically draws a conclusion:either in the evaluation of fictional translation or translation practice, translator’s cultural identity should be concluded in the facts affect the reconsecration of narrative mood, and translator’s behavior should be set into the wider cultural environment, so as to make the translation evaluation more objective and translation practice more accurate.
