Shen Songwen has left a number of vivid novels in his writing career such as ABorder Town, Xiao Xiao and so on. Apart from these classical ones, the charateristicsof his early works are usually about the young men who was poverty stricken, tediousand without love from the opposite sex. These novels constitute the significant part ofShen Congwen’s works, while the study of it is still not enough.This paper will study Shen Congwen’s novels from the angle of the concept of lifeand death to explore how the characters in the novels survived and how they think oflife and death. In the introduction part, the present study of Shen Congwen will beanalysed macroscopically. Life and death are two sides of one thing. To analyse aperson’s concept of life and death, we not only study his attitude towards death, butalso towards life. This paper try to connect life and death closely. A person will thinkof death when he is frustrated. However death can arouse him. The main body isdivided into three parts. In the first part, the comparison is made between those whoare living numbly without any thought of death and those who find the death of others.The importance of awakening life can be seen from the comparison. The second partillustrates all kinds of tensions of life and death of the characters, and more attentionwill be attached to the relationship between suicide and anxiety of life and thesignificance and reasons why Shen Congwen describes the relationship largely. Thethird part will find out the measures based on the two parts mentioned above whichanalysing the plight when the chacraters face life and death. Three parts are closelyrelated with the essence of the concept of life and death.
