Love and death is the everlasting motif of literature, which is adequately embodied in Shen Congwen's stories. Based on the author's legendary experience as its latitude as well as the western psychoanalysis as its longitude, the paper sheds light on Shen Congwen's narration about "love", "death" and "love and death" in sequence, which originates from his exposure to the cultural scene in hisbirthplace--Xiangxi, his thoughts and feelings out of his early life experience, andthe influence of Freud's psychoanalysis. Shen Congwen's stories achieved great art's moving effect by sparing no effort to exaggerate the instinctive power of human being, and the skillful utilization of the motif--"love and death".
