Bylooking back to all the study and explanation on happiness in the history of westernand Chinese philosophy, the author found that no convincing answer had been givenconcerning what was the true happiness to the general public and how could peoplesecure the true happiness.Based on historical materialism to observe the happiness of mankind, it iseasy to detect that the meet of people’s demand is not necessarily bring true happinessin spite of the fact that it is the most basic factor in the process of being happy.Morality, as a kind of value orientation, has a significant influence on the generalpublic’s pursuit of happiness. When it is regarded as individual value system andindividual conduct, morality has the function of being the tool, the factor and the aim.Humans’ pursuit of ultimate value is the very activity of pursuing happiness, which isalso the birthright of every human. According to Engels,“In each individual’sconsciousness and feelings, there must exist some principles, which are irrefutable,and these principles are the result of historical development as a whole, andself-evident.”“For instance, all men search after happiness.” The true happy life ofmankind is accordingly realized in the unified process of social activities. Human’sfreedom and liberation means that human nature is developing unalterably with leapsand bounds to be complete and perfect. To people at that time, communist society is areal community, a high unity of individual happiness and social happiness, and anintegration of a well-off society as it is and a well-off society as it ought to be.It focused on China’s modern and contemporary society. Since the Opium War in1840, a lot of contradiction appeared with the decline of Ting dynastic and theinvasion of foreign countries. In that era, the struggle for survival and revitalization ofthe nation became the value and happiness outlook of all patriotic intellectuals andproletarian revolutionaries. During the early years of the People’s Republic, Chinesepeople had a strong political consciousness, as a result, working hard and makingcontribution to groups turned out to be the happiness outlook of people at that time.Then, with the exploration and promotion of the reform and opening-up policy,Chinese people established a new happiness view, which is to develop economy andachieve common prosperity. Today, building and sharing a socialism harmonioussociety should become the contemporary Chinese people’s happiness outlook. It goeswithout denying that true happiness of mankind is created and produced in practice.At the primary stage of socialism, the practice refers to those reform, innovation anddevelopment in modern times, which are now being carried out to build socialismwith Chinese characteristics.
