Eco-translatological Study Of Two Chinese Versions Of Emma

Under the influence of the global ecological thought, Eco-translatology, an ecologicalapproach to translation studies, is newly-formed, which has attracted the attention of scholarsboth at home and abroad. Most studies on this theory are conducted on the micro level,namely, on translation as adaptation and selection. However, studies of the theory on themacro level are seldom carried out. Therefore, this thesis systematically analyzes suchtranslation phenomena as translation nature, translation principles, translation criteria, thetranslator‘s status and purpose, the translation process and evaluation on the basis ofeco-translatology. By doing this, the author attempts to provide systematic framework ofeco-translatology for the comparative analysis of the texts. Eco-translatology not onlymanifests its unique explanatory power in the research of translation phenomena, but alsoembodies its strong application feasibility in practical studies of translation such as analysisof translation versions.Emma is the most mature work of Jane Austen. It is very popular in China, so there aremany Chinese versions of it. Many studies on Chinese versions of Emma have beenperformed from various perspectives. However, there is no study on Chinese versions ofEmma from the eco-translatological perspective. This thesis applies eco-translatology to thecomparative analysis of the two selected Chinese versions of Emma. On the macro level, theanalysis is conducted from three aspects: the production premise of the two versions, thetranslation process and the evaluation of the two versions. On the micro level, this thesisanalyzes the two translators‘efforts to make proper adaptations and selections in theirtranslation process. Through both the macro and micro studies of the two Chinese versions ofEmma with framework of eco-translatology, this thesis concludes that the two versions aresuccessful target texts generated in different translational eco-environments.Eco-translatological study of Emma‘s two Chinese versions not only testifies the explanatorypower of eco-translatology, but also broadens its application scope. What‘s more, it providesa new perspective to the studies of Emma‘s translation.
