Theory of meaning has been the vital topic of domestic and international scholarsresearching since the twentieth century. As the mainstay of the whole theoretical system,Frege’s sense theory is just for scholars concerning of central issues. This paper exploresFrege’s sense theory from distincting between sense and reference. Based on theoreticalorigin and background of researching, core content, and value deficiency are illustrated indetail.Firstly, combing about the theoretical origin, the background and the present researchsituation in detail, then clearing the context of the development of the theory. On this basis,research content, expected goal and research methods are appropriately introduced.Secondly, Frege himself and his classic are briefly introduced, on the basis, the corecontent are mainly illustrated. first, the sense and reference of a proper noun; second, thesense and reference of general term; third, the sense and reference of sentences; Forth,learning the relationship between the sense and reference among the proper nouns, generalterm and sentences.Thirdly, the value of Frege’s sense and reference theory is appropriately discussedfrom the main two different aspects,theory value and practical value. Then the paperpoints out that, from the influence to analytic philosophy, the influence to identity, thesolution of the identical problem, starting to analyses the theoretical value; And from theexamples of the influence to the translation and the influence to the communication amongdifferent persons, illustrating the practical value.Finally, pointing out the deficiencies of Frege’s sense and reference theory, which canbe roughly divided into two aspects: one is that, the analysis of proper nouns is notthorough, such as the definition of the sense of proper noun fuzzy, the proper noun andtheory of descriptions confused; the other is that, the issue of empty proper noun is notresolved thoroughly.
