Graffiti art refers to the art of painting which appeared in the streets of New York in the United States after1970. In the following decades, there was a collision between graffiti art and visual culture movements, such as the cultural wave of pop art and Dadaism. Mutual absorption and influence each other happened throughout the historical trend of graffiti art and graphic design. That graffiti art gradually was invited into the gallery and the business from the street, so that more people could feel their rebellious, naive, original inner spirit; thus graphic design incorporated more with the visual impact of the design language and expressions to convey information to the public under the impulse of the hand-painted creation which has been forgotten for a long time.This paper is focused on the relationship between graffiti art and graphic design, discussion is started from two following aspects:"internal"-the aesthetic spirit, and "external" graffiti art-graffiti art history traceable with the development; On this basis, sort out the visual style of graffiti art, design methods, looking for the ideological intersection as well as the common point both in function and expression for graffiti art and graphic design in their own development process; After that, analyse existing graffiti art works and applications case expression of contemporary graphic design. By discussing expression of the visual elements in graffiti art in the graphic design as well as the practical application of the expressed vocabulary of graffiti art in graphic design to have a further understanding why the works in graffiti-style can give people strongly visual impact; Finally, summarize presentation of the graffiti art which combined with the Oriental culture in China.After a series of research and discussion, the article attempts to explore some new method or form in design, to provide new ideas for today’s graphic design creation and inject more inspiration and fresh blood into visual communication.
