The manipulative perspective has barely been applied to study the translation of TheCather in the Rye, let along its translator·s subjectivity. Therefore, by studying thetranslation of The Cather in the Rye in the perspective of manipulation theory, thedissertation is centered on the understanding of translator·s subjectivity. The research question is of great significance in both theory and practice. For one thing, how to understand translator·s subjectivity is closely related to how we understand thedefinition of translation. For another, properly understanding translator·s subjectivity isinstructive to translation practice. A clear recognition of his own role, rights andobligations might influence a translator·s decisions in translation process, i.e. text selection, translation method or even word choice. With the development of translation, theunderstanding of translator·s subjectivity has also been in a state of disputable flux. In brief,it has been ignoredμ and chainedμ in the pre-linguistic period, marginalizedμ andcoveredμ by linguistic school, recognizedμ in cultural turn and tends to be overstatedμby some post-modernists, such as colonialists and feminists, etc. Therefore, the thesismakes an attempt to discover a better understanding of the topic from the perspective ofmanipulation theory. The paper mainly consists of five parts. Introduction part brieflyoutlined the research question, background, significance, innovation points, methodologyand the organization of the research. Chapter One is literature review. Chapter Two statesthe theoretical basis and method of the research. Chapter Three analyzed the translator·ssubjectivity of the translation of The Catcher in the Rye. The last part draws conclusion ofthe paper.Innovation points of the thesis are the comparatively new angle to study translator·ssubjectivity and the theoretical contribution to manipulation theory by discovering itssupportive aspect to translators, which is often neglected by the followers and applicators.
