In accordance with traditional translation theories, translation is only a linguistictransformation between two languages, the main research focus of which is on the comparisonbetween the original text and the translation one and its evaluating criteria is “faithfulness”and “equivalence”, which emphasizes that the translation is an objective rewriting of theoriginal text. In1970s, the rise of “cultural return” in the translation field change people’sview on traditional translation theories and raised people’s new thinking and understanding oftranslation. The initiative played by the translator in the translation process, in another wordthe translator’s subjectivity, gets more attention from the scholars.Based on the previous researches on Gone with the Wind and its translations, this thesisattempts to probe into the translator’s subjectivity in Fu Donghua’s version of Gone with theWind from the perspective of manipulation. The representative of cultural school Lefevereputs forward that the three manipulation factors that influence the translation are patronage, ideology and poetics. On virtue of this theoretical framework, and through the case study, thisthesis makes research on the manipulation of the translator’s subjectivity on the translationstrategies and language style from three dimensions of patronage, ideology and poetics.
