Dan Brown is an outstanding best-selling writer in American, whose works concentrate on the debate between the science and religion. He inserts the authentic history data and people into the fictitious novel plots, which break the boundary of serious literature and popular literature, achieving the esthetic effect of suiting both the refined and popular tastes.Angels&Demons, published in2000, is Dan Brown’s best-selling suspense novel. The birth of this novel has caused the great repercussion not just in America, but in the world. It triggers a worldwide discussion. This novel concentrates on the story mainly about the strife between the ancient mystical organization, which is set up by scientists in order to reject religious persecution-Illumination and Vatican Catholic Church, which conceal a series of conflicts between science and religion. It expresses the writer’s anxiety about the loss of human faith and the view of the omnipotence science. This knowledgeable thriller novel seems to have opened up a new era of novel writing. Its success lies not only in the description of European history, religion, unique construction, painting, arts but also in its discussion on the serious subject of science and religion.Since the publication,Angels&Demons has attracted numerous critics’ attention. The western and domestic scholars pay more attention to the novel’s serious themes. authenticity and the unique architecture. The evaluation of narrative only focuses on language style, few articles focus on the detailed study of novel’s narrative structure, indeterminacy and narrative perspective. In the author’s opinion, this is Dan Brown novel’s success. In order to reveal narrative model different from traditional detective novel, this thesis tries to employ postmodernism narrative theory to fully analyze Angels&Demons’narrative structure, indeterminacy and shifting perspectives narration.The body of the thesis includes three chapters. The first chapter studies the postmodernism non-linear narrative structure features through analyzing the narrative model of fragments, narrative blank and disordered time sequence. The second chapter expounds the postmodernism narrative indeterminacy in this novel by analyzing the uncertainty of the language, characters and dualism opposition, which presents the writer’s flexible technique of applying the indeterminacy. In third chapter, the novel’s shifting narrative perspectives are discussed.In conclusion, Dan Brown uses the postmodernism narrative method in Angels&Demons successfully, he has demonstrated his masterly narrative power. It can be said that his novel has presented the multi-level relationships between the science and religion.
