As one of the most valuable Hollywood directors in the 21st century, Christopher Jonathan James Nolan has directed nine cinematographic works including the famous films The Prestige and Inception since he filmed his first film work Following in 1999. On the basis of existing research results, this article will study the characteristic of the narrative technique, the puzzle narrative technique, and the game of linear and nonlinear behind it, in Nolan's film works in detail.The article will be divided into five parts. The first part will introduce the research background,and the first section describes Christopher Nolan's film creation road and the academic status of Nolan film studies, including a brief introduction to Nolan's film creation history, an overview of Nolan's movie narrative techniques and the current research status and literature review in academia on Nolan's film. The second section describes the background of the linear narrative theory, from the classic Hollywood linear structure to the new wave of European film and then to Hollywood's third narrative innovation. At the end of first part there will be the purpose of this study, the research value and the research methods.The first and the second chapter are deep analyses of Nolan film's narrative technique, the puzzle narrative technique. The fir-st chapter is the definition of puzzle narrative technique. The first section will start with the definition and characteristics of 'puzzle narrative',then the combination between Nolan's film work and the puzzle narrative. The second chapter will analyze the characteristics of puzzle narrative technique together with Nolan's film. The issues will be the setting of nonlinear plot structure of Nolan's puzzle narrative, the classic Hollywood linear narrative movie events in Nolan's film and the analysis of the interesting parts of puzzle narrative in Nolan's film.The third chapter is the overview of the development of puzzle narrative technique,and the game of linear and nonlinear behind it, from the period of Europe to the Hollywood time.The last chapter reveals the present situation and problems of Chinese film and the formation of this situation, and then the enlightenment given by Nolan's 'puzzle narrative technique',the art value and commercial value of it has much enlightenment to China's film field.
