<Superfluous Things> is a great book about the things in daily life written by WenZhenheng in late Ming Dynasty. It contains appreciation about various things in the life of thegentry classes in the late Ming Dynasty. The opinions on the color of things in <SuperfluousThings> not only reflect the personal view of the author, but also inherit from traditionalculture, and depict the social life in the late Ming Dynasty.Under the background of late Ming Dynasty, This paper makes a analysis of<Superfluous Things>,in order to probe into the color aesthetics in it, and investigate theculture factors behind the aesthetics. The research compares the color aesthetics of differentthings in <Superfluous Things>, and compares the color aesthetics in the book with theaesthetics in the history of China.The research come to a conclusion that the features of the color aesthetics in<Superfluous Things> are simplicity, elegant, classicism. The aesthetics are influenced mainlyby three factors: the Chinese traditional culture; the social and culture background of lateMing Dynasty; the author’s personal aesthetics. For instance, Wen Zhenheng’s interest inantiquarian design was influenced by the Chinese traditional culture. The taste of the furniturewas influenced by the culture of late Ming Dynasty. And Wen Zhenheng appreciated simplecolors, rather than bright colors. It’s attribute to his personal taste.Wish the research could be helpful to the research on the color aesthetics in history, andcould inspire the modern design.
