The Story of the Stone written by Cao Xueqin is the most famousnovel of Four Great Classics in ancient Chinese. It is also on behalf of thehighest artistic achievement in Chinese classical novels. Through the ages,numerous scholars conducted in-depth study from all angles to The Storyof the Stone. However, the studies based on pragmatic to The Story of theStone are lack. This article tries to fill in the blanks of this field, and usescontemporary pragmatic theory to research the character dialogue of TheStory of the Stone.The article studies on three aspects: the context, the implication andthe pragmatic failures. Researching on pragmatic, the context cannot beavoid. Based on the common classification criteria, the context in thearticle divides into three aspects: the internal context, the accompanied context and the external context. According to the features of The Story ofthe Stone, the article analyzes the implication on three different position:the speaker, the writer and the reader. The analysis of the pragmaticfailures includes intentional and accidental on speakers’ points.The Story of the Stone is a literature renowned by Chinese andforeigners. In addition to its artistic value, people are keen to the lostchapters after the No. eighty chapter. The article aims at speculating therest chapters based on pragmatical researches. At the same time, thearticle maybe enriches the pragmatic theories to develop both The Storyof the Stone researching and the pragmatic theories.
