Shakespeare once said,“The book is the nourishment in the whole world”. Manycelebrities in history are very fond of reading, and they took books as partners sincechildhood. With the reform of quality education in China, people are paying moreattention to the preschool education of children. Early education has become the first stepof education, will directly affect the children’s physical and mental health, and is of vitalimportance to the development and trend of their personality. How to carry out earlyeducation? The parents may think of reading at first. Early reading plays an important rolein the growth and development of children to increase knowledge, broaden their horizonand cultivate the mind. So research in early childhood education has become the topic ofthe times on educating the next generation. The present paper focuses on the investigation of children of three to seven years old.Piaget believes that children’s cognizance develops in different stages; in each stage, thecognizance of the children displays distinctive characteristics and qualitative differences interms of memory, thinking and understanding. At the early stage, the literacy of children islimited. So they cannot choose books of their interest according to the text content. Therefore, in the children’s books, the illustrations are far more dramatic and can easilycatch their attention. At this stage, the children get nourishment from the illustrations insome excellent books and receive the information conveyed by the creators, playingsimilar functions and achieving satisfactory results with the texts. The illustrations areused to expound the text content, increasing its visual sensation and greatly enhancing theinterest of the children. Because of the artistic processing of the creators, the illustrationscan also enhance the children’s appreciation of these books. However, most children’sbooks on the market are edited from the adult perspective and rarely take intoconsideration the children’s cognitive characteristics.Based on the cognitive development of the children and their painting practice, combined with the research of previous scholars, the paper tends to analyze thecomposition, design elements and expression skills of illustrations in children’s booksfrom the perspective of early childhood cognitive ability, in an attempt to provide atheoretical basis for the development of children’s books.
