Charlotte Bronte is one of the greatest realistic female writers in the19th century in English literature. Jane Eyre, regarded as her autobiography, has been welcomed and enormously focused on by people since its publication in1847.From the feminism viewpoint, this thesis shows us the female sex awareness and female social status of that time, which are reflected in this novel, by analyzing Jane Eyre and the other female roles of this novel, Helen and Mason. We can also get further understanding of female writer’s sex subversion awareness in literary works written by female authors. More importantly, the thesis also analyzes Rochester, the male role, from the female’s horizon. And it discusses Rochester’s changes in his identity, which is the foil and promotion to the characteristics and figure of the female role, Jane Eyre.At the end of the thesis, the development of modern feminism is discussed and the importance of the social background in influencing modern feminism is emphasized again. In history, women have been making their efforts to pursue the equality and the freedom, though facing many troubles. The development of feminism still has a long way to go and it is limited by the social classes and positions. However, generally speaking, the female’s position will be improved in some degree with the development of society.
