Particular group of merchants-Ortaq-gained a special status in Mongol-Yuan period. Supported by Mongol khans and aristocracy, Ortaq merchants conducted large-scale commercial operations. Therefore, their commercial activity of various types, including moneylending and overseas trade, had a huge impact on Chinese society.
