This thesis is a corpus-driven study of phraseological sequences in Donghua textile English academic articles (DTAAC), with an aim to describe and analyze their most prominent forms, patterns and typical functional features in a tentative way.Phraseology, then, has become the major field of applied linguistics for western linguists in recent decades. The appearance of the corpus lays a solid foundation for the development of phraseology. The present study is carried out on the basis of the Conclusion Sub-corpus of Donghua Textile Academic Articles Corpus (henceforth DTAAC), with225,265running words in total. Within Altenberg’s (1998) theoretical framework, this study mainly concentrates on phraseological characteristics of conclusions in the English Specific Purposes textile academic writing.Employing Wordsmith4.0, this study primarily focuses on the frequent and typical phraseological sequences from3to5-word sequences, with the help of2-word sequences in DTAAC. Then the forms, meanings and functions of PSs are investigated.Based on the frequency distribution of frequent phraseological sequences, their functions are further explored in the conclusions of English textile academic articles. In contrast to the findings of Altenberg’s research, this study presents special features of academic writing:First, the frequencies of the phraseological sequences show that the longer the sequences are, the lower their frequencies are;Second, the full clauses show their relatively low appearances(with five occurrences only), while clause constituents and incomplete phrases account for the larger part in higher frequencies, mainly realizing the experiential and interpersonal functions;Third, these phraseological sequences present important functions derived from Halliday’s metafunctions, among them, experiential and interpersonal functions are attached to the great importance, textual function is also referred to. Experiential functions mainly consist of sub-classes:existential, reporting, and functions of specifying time, place, sphere, etc; interpersonal functions include epistemic, possibility and reasoning. Meanwhile these sequences can realize the functions of constructing the discourse in the conclusion parts via these moves:summarizing the study, announcing the main results, and deduction or implication from the present researches.
