In modern times, consecutive interpretation is one of the most popular interpretation forms. Moreover, with the development of China, Chinese-English consecutive interpretation is widely adopted on various occasions, especially on press conferences. Meanwhile, it has aroused much interest from many researchers. They make attempts to study Chinese-English consecutive conference interpretation from various angles. For example, some researches have been carried out from the perspectives of psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics cognitive linguistics, etc. However, so far few studies have been done from the perspective of Systemic Functional Grammar.Thematic progression, one major method to realize the textual meaning of language, plays an important role in producing a coherent interpretation output, carrying information forward and providing clues for the development of the output, which is of great help for the interpreter to organize his output and for the listener to get the conveyed information. This author is to conduct a comprehensive and deep analysis of the Chinese-English consecutive interpretation from the perspective of TP patterns. The aim is to figure out how the TP patterns are distributed in the Chinese-English consecutive interpretation on the press conference and which TP patterns are the most favored ones; what the possible causes of the distribution of the TP patterns are.Based on the thematic progressive patterns in Systemic Functional Grammar, this thesis aims to analyze the TP patterns used in the Chinese-English consecutive interpretation on the press conferences held subsequent to the First, Second and Third Sessions of the Eleventh NPC in2008,2009and2010. Both the qualitative and quantitative approaches are adopted. It mainly aims to summarize the most favored TP patterns adopted by the interpreter and meanwhile the possible causes are supposed to be offered. Furthermore, the author tries to provide some implications for the Chinese-English consecutive interpretation practice, teaching and the studies of the linguistic features of the interpreted English. It is revealed from this research that except the parallel theme pattern seven of the summarized TP patterns are distributed in the collected data and moreover, the circuitous TR pattern, simple linear pattern and the constant theme pattern are the most favored TP patterns in the Chinese-English consecutive conference interpretation. The possible causes of the results may lie in two aspects:the functions of each TP pattern and the influence of the western thinking mode. This research can also provide some implications for the interpretation practice and teaching and the linguistic features of the interpreted English. Meanwhile, it is shown that interpretation studies can be carried out under the framework of Systemic Functional Grammar.
