This study intends to explore the importance of locating subjects of English sentences for students in E-C simultaneous interpretation. By "locating", the author means quick understanding and interpretation. This study is based on the system of theme and rheme, which is a key constituent of the textual function in the functional grammar. The theory is chosen for two major reasons. Firstly, it is closely related to subjects. Secondly, the theme-rheme progressive model, a key part of the theory, is about textual organization and development, which is of great help to study the role of subjects in facilitating information flow.Guided by the theory, this study has conducted a comparative analysis where experiment subjects and materials differ. The result verifies the author’s hypothesis that locating English subjects in E-C interpretation is not as easy as it seems. More importantly, the importance of subject location is about grasping the object of discussion and avoiding a series of mistakes, which is indeed an important part but not the whole story. The significance embodies three other aspects. Subjects give hints to information flow; some subjects are also signs of difficulty in interpretation; and subjects sometimes send to students the signal to interpret in a more compact manner. As the analysis shows, many experiment subjects failed to make good use of sentence subjects in the original language and made mistakes that could have been avoided. The author hopes that the study can draw the attention of students to the importance of subjects, so as to make the most of them and improve their performance.
