Vocabulary is crucially important to second language learning. Nevertheless, compared to grammar, the teaching and learning of vocabulary have been neglected for a long time in the field of second language acquisition. It was not until in the mid1980s that research into vocabulary has again become one of the hot topics in second language acquisition. In recent years it has attracted more and more interest from researchers, scholars, educationalists and teachers. One of the important aspects of second language acquisition is concerned with vocabulary learning strategies. In China, most of these research focuses on one aspect of language learning skills from micro point of view. They attaches little importance to the factors affecting the employment of learning strategies and how to train the students to make use of these strategies appropriately. This dissertation reports on a ten-week study that investigated the effects of strategies-based instruction (SBI) on vocabulary learning of100sophomores at Hunan University of Science and Engineering. Based on the research, the study utilizes the English teaching mode centered on strategies training to teach the students. After a ten-week training, the finding shows that SBI can change their preexisting belief about vocabulary learning, which in turn changes their learning approach. Specifically, most of subjects realize that consistent employment of various types of strategies can form an appropriate approach to vocabulary learning.
