Ruth Prawer Jhabvala is one of the most successful novelists on description India’s life inthe contemporary west. Her creation is famous for the style with calm, serene, extremelyinsight and humorous irony in Europe and the United States. The characters of Jhabvala’sfiction are concentrated in the wanderers image of cultural cross-border.They revealindividual experience and the cause of the paradoxical mental depression by the culturalcross-border under the background of globalization, show her close attention to the fate of theindividual and the attention and thought of the development of contemporary human society.The thesis divides into five parts:The introduction is the summary of domestic and foreign research situation about RuthPrawer Jhabvala. This part tries to point out the value and significance of the wanderers imagein Jhabvala’s novel.The first chapter will explain the definition of cultural cross-border, and point out thatliterature horizon is under the dual influences brought by the cultural cross-border.And thenthe author carefully analysis the cultural cross-border of Jhabvala, and points out that thecultural cross-border endows her awkward "world citizen" identity and melancholyexperience of spirit, and lead to her mental stray.Chapter Two discusses the suffering of the cultural cross-border showed by Jhabvala.From "heat and dust"which is Jhabvala’s masterpiece to start, the author will comb thewanderers, put them into two categories, and analyzes their state of mind, show the confusion,pain, depression and the vagrant identity of the individual brought by the cultural cross-borderand their quest for homes.In the third chapter, Jhabvala’s describtion of individual destiny in the culturalcross-border show many problems in the current cultural cross-border. These problems areoften closely related to the globalization that breed the phenomenon of cultural cross-border.Based on this starting point, this chapter will reflect negative effect on the individual’sdevelopment by globalization. First of all, the cultural state and mental experience of thewanderers image extended the common sense of cultural paradox in cultural cross-border, and points out that the individual ’s choose once again and the cultural cross-border identity inthe process of the dilemma make the perverted experience and lead to the individual’s spiritualmelancholy and pain. Secondly, we need to consider the globalization and national culture,cultural hegemonism and the relationship between the cultural imperialism in this reality.Jhabvala presents many problems in cultural cross-border, also provides some enlightenmentfor us to deal with these problems, which is to return to the embrace of national culture.The conclusion will make the summary of full thesis, point out that Jhabvala’sdescription of the wanderers image is her concern for the destiny of man and her care andthinking for the development of the world culture.
