Loanword Translation From The Perspective Of Power And Discourse Theory

These days, loanwords flood into people’s daily life in a growing amount withthe in-depth and thorough communication between countries against the backgroundof extensive globalization. Only when the language of a certain country absorbsloanwords continually can the country succeed in communicating with the worldnormally and in time without being left behind. The loanword categories andtranslation approaches are various, while the seemingly pure translation activitydisguises the competition of discourse and power between countries and differentnations.Different from the previous loanwords study which focuses merely on thetranslation approaches or loanwords categories, this thesis attempts to explore thediscourse power relationship hidden behind loanword translation from the perspectiveof Michel Foucault’s power and discourse theory and then discover that thesignificance of the proper treatment to loanword translation goes beyond the simpletranslation practice---it becomes a representation of power, as represented in its form,discourse. The last part of the dissertation gives a tentative principle and suggestion tothe translation of loanwords imported and loanwords exported respectively.
