The third translation tide occurring during The May4th period offour translation tides in Chinese history which greatly promoted thedevelopment of Chinese translation was most appealing. This translationtide pushed the development of translation, promoting translation fromperiphery position to the central position in the big system of Chineseculture, accelerating the collapse of the feudal society, marking the startof modernization. However the researches which need to be done moreelaborately on the literary translation during the May4th period was oftenmentioned a little in literary history or translation history. This thesisfocuses on the translation, acceptance and transformation of the discourseof “Individuality” so as to approach the relationship between literarytranslation and mainstream discourses during the May4th period. Thisthesis combines mainstream discourses and literary translation together, ideologies and translation together, playing as an attempt of literarytranslation during the May4th period. With unique social and cultural background in this period, manydiscourses prevailing in western countries some years ago wereintroduced into China by the insightful people, which happened with thedevelopment of translation. Among these discourses,“IndividualityLiberation” gained most attraction for it was in accordance with the socialconditions of China at that time. Depending on translation, the discourse of “Individuality Liberation” moved from periphery positioninto center.
