A New TQA Model Based On Faithfulness, Expressiveness And Elegance

Translation quality assessment (TQA) is new but indispensable in translation studies. Translation is not only a sort of communication but also a kind of product so that TQA is part of translation studies and should be intensified and gets more and more important with perfection of translation studies. Only some problems for TQA are properly coped with, some ambiguous concepts are distinguished and practicability and maneuverability of the TQA model are set up, will the values of the model stand out. Its right position, therefore, should be established and heightened. This is because TQA will play a crucial role in translation studies, greatly perfect the system of the translation theory, and it will lend itself to standardize the translation market and upgrade the quality of translation class.On the basis of reviewing, combing and analyzing the former researches on TQA model, this paper focuses on the existing problems of them, that is, unclear conceptions, weak in operability, and so on. The basic and key but often-to-be-confused concepts in translation studies:translation criterion, translation criticism criterion and TQA criterion, difference and relationships between TQA criterion and TQA model, are to be elucidated in this paper.The creativeness in this paper stands on the shoulders of the Giants. It analyses a series of features of faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance, such as sociality, interior multiplicity, development, fuzziness and hierarchy and makes the feasibility of establishing a new TQA model based on the trinity. With making clear definitions for each part of this traditional translation criterion and emphatically analyzing its interior elements, it puts forward a new TQA model with a structure of three layers. The first layer is complete faithfulness, namely, the translation will be in accordance with the original in every aspect, which is a generalized guiding principle. The second layer refers to faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance, which limit the categories of the evaluation. The third layer means the concrete parameters for the three categories; parameters for faithfulness are ideas, semantic information and coherence; those for expressiveness are structure and expression; those for elegance are writing style, personal style and genre. What is more, this model is not only strong in operability but meeting the demand of evaluating different translations with different parameters. With the case study, this paper makes a further test on this new TQA model.
