A Review Of The Principle Of "Faithfulness,Expressiveness,Elegance" From The Perspective Of Chinese-English Audiovisual Translation

Driven by the rapid development of modern times and the continuous improvement of Internet technology,a"global village"has been set up around the world we live in.While contact among countries is becoming more and more close,communication between different cultures occurs more and more frequently.In this trend of cultural communication,Movies and TV-plays has just proved its virtue as one important means of cultural transmission,with the quickest advertising effect and the most general public attention.Nonetheless,the cultural transmission of Chinese dramas has been greatly limited because of very small number of studies on Chinese-English audiovisual translation works.This paper is a research effort on the audiovisual English translation of Expresses in the Palace in America.Both course analysis and translation effort would be involved,following the Principle of"Faithfulness,Expressiveness,Elegance"of Yan Fu,for a further understanding and enrichment of this audiovisual translating work.It is expected that the results might be a reference to later Chinese-English audiovisual translating.Even though the Principle of"Faithfulness,Expressiveness,Elegance"has been well-known out of Yan Fu's"Three difficulties of translation"and its contribution has been well recognized on the research and practice of Chinese translation,more discussion on this general translation 3-Principle is of great significance,especially under the condition of quick renewal of Network technology and fast spread of movies TV-plays in modern time.The following would be the interpretation of this study on the Principle of“Faithfulness,Expressiveness,Elegance":First of all,when doing Chinese-English audiovisual translation,"Faithfulness"should "not only be faithful to the content of subtitle,but also be faithful to the cultural background and character image";"Expressiveness"is"to achieve the'Expressiveness'within the sentence and in the whole scenario";"Elegance"should make a distinction of two situations:verse and ordinary lines.While both situations should have proper words selections,the former put much attention on"the'Elegance' of artistic conception"and"the beauty of rhythm".Since one feature of the drama Expresses in the Palace is that the verse is also a kind of ordinary lines,"conception"here should be more with the picture or character in the drama instead of that in the original poetry.At last,this paper concluded that the three factors of the Triple Principle,from the most important to the least important should be"Faithfulness","Expressiveness",and"Elegance",with the latter two being based on the first one.
