From the proposal of schema to its systematization, we have witnessed a better understanding of human’s memory, artificial intelligence and reading comprehension. The practice of applying schema theory to the teaching of reading comprehension has been comparatively mature in the US. As schema has been introduced and developed in foreign language teaching in China, it has also attracted attention from TCFL researchers. This paper rethinks the connections between schema and intermediate-level Chinese reading teaching, and aims to study the impacts of different kinds of schema on the three significant stages of Chinese reading comprehension and explore specific methods of applying schema to intermediate level Chinese reading teaching.Based on an essay from Intermediate Chinese Reading Course, this paper works out a teaching plan to verify specific methods of applying schema to Chinese reading teaching. Then how to design a more scientific teaching, how to modify the reading materials, and how to adjust the teaching principles and methods are presented. On the basis of schema theory, this paper takes a case study of reading comprehension in Intermediate Chinese Reading Course. The structure of the paper goes like follows:Chapter1mainly deals with the significance of reading in information collection, the background and importance of the impact of the development of schema theory on facilitating reading. A literature review on the application of schema to English teaching and TCFL in China is provided.Chapter2concentrates on the application of schema to TCFL. It concludes that schema plays a positive part in reading comprehension through the study on the concepts of reading, intermediate level Chinese reading, definitions and classifications of schema, etc. Methods of applying schema to intermediate level Chinese reading in three distinctive stages are studied in details. The case study discusses how to activate schema before reading, how to control schema in reading and how to rebuild schema after reading.Chapter3is about a teaching plan under the guidance of the schema theory."Nanjing Road at an early time" is taken as the text. Specific teaching steps are designed in details so as to demonstrate the significance of schema on TCFLChapter4deals with modification on Intermediate Chinese Reading Course and analyzes corresponding teaching principles and techniques. It attempts to summarize and reflect shortages in traditional reading teaching to promote the teaching of reading.
