Abstract/Summary:
With the vigorous development of Chinese teaching in South Korea, the learner’s scope is also in considerable expansion, starting right in primary and secondary schools and continuing into institutions of higher education. In view of the close relationship between language and culture, the teaching of culture has gradually begun to enjoy greater attention. Beginning early in children’s education right through to University, the teaching of Chinese language and culture in many aspects, such as teaching principles, teaching content and teaching methods has been illustrated by many researchers. According to the South Korean Ministry of education seventh education curriculum planning, Chinese has been one of elective course in South Korea’s junior middle school since1997with emphasis on the importance of culture in language learning. Research has mainly focused on teaching materials with little regard for research on the culture found within the of classroom setting. This paper investigates the study of Chinese culture in a South Korean high school teaching environment, and is based on the author’s one-year teaching experience in South Korea.This paper adopted the method of literature research and the questionnaire method. It first sorts out and reviews culture-teaching related research to establish the theoretical foundation. Through the teaching practice and the designed questionnaire, the research is targeted at third grade students in Korea Busan Singok Middle School, where I taught Chinese, as well as the some Chinese teachers in Korean middle school. The survey including questions regarding student attitudes about Chinese language and culture, the choice and preference about teaching contents and teaching approaches. The teacher questionnaire not only included the choice and use of teaching content and teaching approaches, but also included questions about what problems the teachers encountered in their teaching. It also prompted them to put forward their own views. In particular, the application of teaching methods in practice is the focus of this study. According to the teaching practice and the summary of the findings, the Korean Teachers can leam to establish common culture-teaching methods as well as establish and improve ways for students to learn and to stimulate students’ interest. Finally I put forward my suggestions for the Korean Middle School regarding the teaching of Chinese language and culture, with the aim to provide suggestions as reference for the teaching of Chinese, and to improve the teaching of Chinese language as well as cultural communication.
