Through the analyzing of the previous and present life of the local opera--Huanglong play, which is popular in Nong’an county of Jilin Province and pursuingthe relationship between Huanglong play and other artistic forms, which are alsopopular in the region, the paper analyses the internal relationship of the Huanglongplay and the Northeast shadow show, the Northeast folk songs, the Northeast drum, the single drum, the octagonal drum, the Ping Opera and the Peking Opera. At thesame time it illustrates the reasons why Huanglong play came into being, developedand at last declined with respect to historical, cultural, social and geographicalaspects. As the local opera of Jilin Province, the special regionalism of the play is theimportant point of the paper. Among all the influencing factors, geographical elementis the defining one. The paper analyzes the influence of natural geographical elementsand human geographical elements on the emerging, developing and spreading of theNortheast shadow show, the Northeast folk songs, the Northeast drum, the singledrum, the octagonal drum, the Ping Opera and the Peking Opera in detail. And theseelements also help the Huanglong play come into being. At last three root causes are found in the process of exploring the decline of theHuanglong play. One is the geographic location, one is the externally social culture, and the other is the internal development. In the commercialized societyits commodity attribute is not obvious, so as an artistic form its reinvent ability cannot support its development and inheritance. In the author’s opinion the change of thesituation depends on whether the content of the art can reflect the reality. After all, theresponsibility of art is to reflect daily life. At the same time whether the form of artcan adapt to the aesthetic taste of the majority is also very important. To Huanglongplay and some other local operas in the same situation, either inheritance throughself-helping or decline in inaction is their choice.
