As the civilized faction of modern Korea, Kim yoon sik led the students and the artisanto come to Tian jin to learn the modern military technology in1881. He was involved in thenegotiation of Korea-America Treaty, during which the Soldiers Rebellion of Im Ou outbreaksin Korea. He took the initiative to assist the Qing Dynasty to dispatch troops to Korea with anaim to subside the revolt. As he returned home, Kim yoon sik consecutively held importantpositions in the Korean government and maintained close relationship with Yuan shi kai,whowas assigned to station in Korea by the Qing government. Therefore, Kim yoon sik is inclinedto pro-China in handling foreign affairs.This thesis is aimed to reveal the origin of the Kim yoon sik’s pro-China policy byexploring his civilized thought. Besides, this thesis will delve into his the reason behind hisconcrete behavior in liaising with China during his assignment in Tian Jin and his tenure inKorean government. By doing so, this thesis will make a further study to uncover the impactof the changes of Kim yoon sik’s pro-China policy in different stages on his political career aswell as on the transformation of Sino-Korean relationship in modern times.This paper is mainly divided into four parts:The first part introduces the main experience and early thought of Kim yoon sik, as wellas the status of the relationship between China and Korea during his visit to China.The second part is to discuss activities conducted by Kim yoon sik targeting upon China,including open activities to learn modern military Science and technology, participationin the secret activities discussing about The United States of America, and askingreinforcement from China during Korean “Im-ou military revolt”. This stage marks theformation of Kim yoon sik’s Pro-China Policy and produce immediate diplomacy influence.The third part discusses Kim yoon sik’s close relationship with Yuan Shikai as well as hisactivities towards China during his tenure in Korean governments, including his handlingof"secret activities between Korea and Russia"and"cancelling stores of Seoul". Thisstage is the further development of his Pro-China Policy, during which his Pro-China attitudebegan to change out of his consideration on the National interests of Korea.In conclusion: By analyzing the concrete historical facts, this thesis reveals thedevelopment of Kim yoon sik’s attitude towards China as well as the changes ofSino-Korean relationship since Korean’s entering modern international system.
